Hi,
I did some test with exmap to check the "effective memory resident" in the same conditions:
Thunar 0.9.0-3 > 6528 K
Pcmanfm 0.3.5.99-1 > 4893 K
Xfe 1.04-1.1 > 4849 K

Xfe seems the lighest but you have to install the fox library: the deb installation "weight" 16,2M.

I did the test in a live system in the ram, no swap, kernel 2.6.24, debian lenny based.

Thanks for pcmafm!!!

Max

 By PCMan (IP: 163.29.223.---) - Posted on 2008-02-21 18:11:47
Of course, PCManFM is not as powerful as Nautilus or Konqueror. That't not the goal of the project. The project is an attempt to implement a modern file manager with maximal speed and usability while still keeping minimal resource usage and dependencies.

Some programs are extremely fast but oversimplified and the user experience is poor. Others are extremely powerful, trying to include everything possible, but inevitably, they became too heavy.

PCManFM tries to find a good balance between performance and usability. While supporting many new features of modern file managers, the performance on low-end machines and restricted hardware is still quite reasonable.

Desktop independence and tabbed-browsing are another two important features.

Here are the concepts and design goals of PCManFM:

If you are using a desktop enviroment like Gnome or KDE, it might be not a good idea to switch to PCManFM, but, if you use a light window manager like JWM or IceWM, then PCManFM is very nice solution. It will be better, when desktop icon support will be improved.

Just been playing around with PCMan vs Nautilus 2.21.90. Don't quite understand the need to ditch Nautilus (this new one at least). PCMan is barely faster (running on a P3 866MHz) but has nowhere near the features of Nautilus. No, I'm not trolling, just my obs and a reaction to the minor cult that seems to have formed to dump on Nautilus.

However, I did just switch to using PCMan from years of using Rox when I'm running Fluxbox. Nice.

How can I set PCMan FM as a default file manager for Ubuntu?

Is it possible to get rid of Nautilus from my system and replace it with PCMan FM?

I found a how-to in the Internet but it was about replacing Nautilus with Thunar.

Can anybody post sililae how-to concerning PCMan FM here?

Thanks a lot.

By PC user (IP: 195.164.255.---) - Posted on 2008-02-15 19:42:50
If only PCMan File Manager had dual pane view and tabs it would be best Linux file manager ever...

I think on that condition it could become default file manager for all GNOME and XFCE based distributions.

Is there any chance to add that very useful feature?

Thank you for Your effort to create good app anyway.

Hello,

0.3.5.20 does not compile on amd64 anymore. On i386 and lpia compiling works like a charm but on amd64 I get some errors. You find a log on http://launchpadlibrarian.net/11989123/buildlog_ubuntu-gutsy-amd64....

Hi xebar,
just another PCMan user here.

* I would love an option not only tabs but to split the screen

Hear, hear! Would be soooo handy to have dual pane view and tabs :)

* I would love to have subcategories in the bookmark bar where lets say i had a bookmark folder/category of "Home" and under it all the home folders etc...

Hmmm, how's this different from expanding the Home folder in the tree view?

* I would love toolbar buttons to arrange files by attributes (date, size etc...) and show hide hidden file

AFAIK you don't need specific toolbar buttons: just use the List view OR use the sort command in normal view.

Hi

I am almost ready to leave trusted Konqueror for pcman ;-).
I dont know if this is the place for ideas/request but i couldn't find forums so here goes:
*I would love an option not only tabs but to split the screen
* I would love to have subcategories in the bookmark bar where lets say i had a bookmark folder/category of "Home" and under it all the home folders etc...
*I would love toolbar buttons to arrange files by attributes (date, size etc...) and show hide hidden file

I dont know programing but would love to help in other areas if needed!

I wonder if gnome will replace nautilus with this as KDE did with Dolphin...

Thx again for this great software

It's a regression from 0.3.5.9 due to a stupid typo.
It's fixed in svn repo now.

More test is needed....

hi,

thanks for the fast work regarding user problems.

the new version 3.5.10 works under gnome fine, too. :)

But it is still recognizing .doc files as PowerPoint.

I haven't tested it with the development version, though.
